Retro Spectacles reaches the season where Black Mirror starts deliberately stretching beyond its reputation as a technology dystopia. Joan Is Awful and Beyond the Sea still build their nightmares around emerging technology, while Loch Henry, Mazey Day, and Demon 79 push the anthology toward true crime, horror, and the supernatural under the shadow of Charlie Brooker’s proposed Red Mirror experiment.

Joan Is Awful stars Annie Murphy and Salma Hayek in a story about a streaming service dramatizing a woman’s life almost as quickly as she lives it. Beyond the Sea pairs Aaron Paul and Josh Hartnett as astronauts whose consciousness can inhabit replicas on Earth, while Loch Henry turns a documentary project into a deeply personal true-crime nightmare. Mazey Day and Demon 79 take the season even further from traditional Black Mirror territory.

Mitcz and Teddy debate AI-generated entertainment, likeness rights, replica technology, true-crime exploitation, the Red Mirror experiment, and whether a great story still belongs in Black Mirror when the technology disappears.
